LottaNZB 0.5.1 released
September 14th, 2009 - SeverinAfter the release of LottaNZB 0.5, we promised you a 0.5.1 version with bug fixes and updated translations. Here it is! The new version even comes with two new features, which I’d like to present you here.
Support for backup servers
Some of you use more than one Usenet server, for various reasons. While it has always been possible to mark servers as backup servers (aka fillservers), until now, it required you to edit the HellaNZB configuration by hand. Starting with LottaNZB 0.5.1, you can do that from within LottaNZB. Backup servers are servers that are only used if a certain file cannot be downloaded from all other servers. It would be interesting for us to know how many people actually use more than one server. You might want to tell us in a comment.

More accessible SSL feature
These days, most paid Usenet servers offer SSL encryption support at reasonable prices. It’s now possible to directly enable SSL while setting up LottaNZB for the first time.
Fixes for severe bugs
Adding NZB files directly from Firefox hasn’t worked properly for a long time. You were required to download the files to the desktop or somewhere else instead and clicking on it. Not anymore! We also fixed crashes that occurred when starting LottaNZB for the first time on newly installed systems and when adding a NZB file.
Also, it’s a pleasure for me to announce that Marcel de Vries from the Netherlands and Eran C. from Israel have joined the development team! Marcel is responsible for half of the new feature and bug fixes. Both Eran C. and Marcel intend to help with all the work that will be necessary to finally present you LottaNZB 0.6.
Welcome aboard!
Unfortunately, there are a few untranslated strings in LottaNZB 0.5.1. This is because the Launchpad import feature doesn’t seem to work at this point of time. We’ll make the new strings available to all translators as soon as it works again and will therefore release LottaNZB 0.5.2 with updated translations.
As always, we’re grateful for bug reports, translations as well as ideas for new features!
You can get LottaNZB 0.5.1 in the download section.

I just use one server, but that’s a great feature for those that use more than one.
Looking forward for the 0.6

Good luck to the new devs

I use 2 servers.
My ISP server is free with about a weeks retention.
Astra News however is a cheap pay service with loooooooooong retention.
Great program guys it has replaced Wine and Newsbin Pro for me!
BTW I have experienced LottaNZB crashes using Ubuntu Jaunty although its fine with Ubuntu Hardy.
I have read it is stable with the up and coming Ubuntu Karmic so time will solve my slight issue.

@Freddy, VuDu
!
Thank you for the ‘good lucks’
@David Roberts
Great to hear that LottaNZB replaced Newsbin Pro! But is it possible to file a bug report for the issue you are having? This isn’t known to us at all (AFAIK).

Just found LottaNZB today and it looks great – exactly what I wanted on a new Linux desktop, and bonus points for setting up hellanzb for me in the background too
Good luck with the migration to SAB, this is definitely one app I’d like to continue using in future

PLEASE make Lottanzb 0.6 show all the files you download and then you’ll want to make it with minimize/maximize icon so that you can click to open and see all the files and click to close it up so you only see the name of what you are downloading.
SABnzbd shows you all the files you are downloading. It can be helpful at times to see what you are downloading especially when you have a bad/corrupt file and then as an example there are no par files to recover it, then you can search online to download this file, hopefully to fix the problem.
Believe me I have done this several times…
The thing is, the good files should all highlight in a light green color so you can see they are good and the bad ones showing up in a light red, to let you know this is a bad file…
I hope you will please implement something like this, or at least show the files the way SABnzbd, since I know that Lottanzb is just a front end…
THANKS

@Das: It would definitely be possible to show the list of all files included in a single download as part of the ‘Download Properties’ window. However, it will probably not be the case for 0.6 as the current focus is on fixing bugs and making it ready for the release.

Severin,
Thanks for your reply. While I understand trying to focus on bugs and getting it ready for release. please understand that as a Usenet tool it can really help being able to see the files you are downloading, especially when you run into problems, like corrupt/incomplete files which happen all the time.
And without being able to see the bad files, especially when many times there aren’t enough par files to recover, then you are left with having to go back to the cmd line and run par to find the corrupted file. Granted an experienced geek can handle this, but having Lottanzb show us the files, it’s going to simplify things.
I hope you will truly consider this now, or later, as it’s only going to make Lottanzb a better program.
THANKS

@Das: If a download works fine, users should not need to be concerned about what RAR files etc. a download consists of. However, you’re absolutely right that users need the possibility to resolve problems if they *do* occur. Displaying the files included in a download as well as their status would be a first step towards it and I agree that LottaNZB should gain this capability at some point in the future.
SABnzbd itself is slowly getting better at dealing with problems and providing users with the means to resolve them. It’s important that LottaNZB users can also benefit from them.

THANKS Severin, I do look forward to have the ability to see the files, I’ve been using Usenet 10 years and I download like every day and I can tell you as a regular user I run into bad files often that don’t have Par files to recover them and then you have to go Internet hunting just to download a single file…
See as much as possible in a binary downloader helps…
THANKS

I’ve notice that my client (version 0.6) crashes at random and looking at the debug log I see these types of message sprinkled throughout.
These two appear after starting:
Could not find configuration class ‘lottanzb.plugins’.
Could not find configuration class ‘lottanzb.gui.messaging’.
This one appears after “Component ‘lottanzb.gui.messaging.MessagingManager’ loaded.” is loaded:
Could not find configuration class ‘lottanzb.config.hellanzb.log_file_max_bytes’.

Hi!
I really like the new format, but I’m having some issues:
